Remodeled kitchen in an SE Portland bungalow home
Sellwood, Hawthorne & Woodstock

Kitchen Remodeling SE Portland, OR

This part of Portland has the widest range of housing stock in the city — 1900s Sellwood bungalows and 1970s ranch homes near I-205 need very different approaches, and we’ve worked on both.

Local Character

Two Very Different Kinds of SE Portland Kitchens

Sellwood-Moreland, Hawthorne, and Richmond are mostly early-1900s bungalows and four-squares with the same closed-off, small-footprint kitchens common across older Portland neighborhoods. Further east — toward Foster-Powell, Mt. Scott, and the areas closer to I-205 — you’ll find more 1950s–1970s ranch-style homes, which usually already have a more open layout but come with their own dated finishes and appliance placement from that era.

We’ve completed real projects in both settings, including full kitchen remodels in Sellwood-Moreland and Hawthorne — see our recent work on the homepage for real examples from this part of the city.

Do 1970s ranch homes need different work than older bungalows? Often the layout itself needs less structural change since these homes were built with more open floor plans already. The work usually shifts toward updating cabinetry, countertops, and outdated appliance placement rather than opening walls.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work in both Sellwood and the outer neighborhoods?

Yes — we cover this entire part of the city, from the older bungalow neighborhoods near the river out to the ranch-home areas closer to I-205.

Are older homes in this area more likely to need electrical updates?

Homes built before the 1950s in Sellwood, Hawthorne, and Richmond often still have knob-and-tube wiring in parts of the house. Homes from the 1960s–70s in outer SE typically don’t have this issue, though panel capacity can still be a factor.

Can you match cabinetry to an older bungalow’s character?

Yes — we work with material and style choices that fit the era of the home rather than defaulting to one look for every project.
