Three Different Scopes of Work
A refresh keeps the existing layout and cabinet boxes, updating surfaces and finishes. A renovation restores or updates a kitchen to modern standards without necessarily changing the layout. A remodel changes the actual layout — moving walls, relocating plumbing or electrical, or reconfiguring the footprint entirely.
Refresh
Cabinet refacing, new countertops, updated hardware and paint. The layout and cabinet boxes stay exactly where they are.
Renovation
New cabinets, countertops, flooring, and appliances, brought up to current standards, but the kitchen’s footprint doesn’t change.
Remodel
Walls move, plumbing and electrical get relocated, and the layout itself changes — the most involved of the three, and the most likely to require a permit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is cabinet refacing a refresh or a renovation?
Refacing is generally a refresh — the cabinet boxes and layout stay the same, only the doors, drawer fronts, and finishes change. See our cabinet options for how refacing compares to full replacement.
Can a renovation turn into a remodel partway through?
Yes, this happens when something behind a wall changes the scope — outdated wiring, plumbing, or structural issues found during work. We’ll always explain the impact before proceeding.
Which one do I actually need?
If you like your layout and just want it to look and function better, a refresh or renovation is usually enough. If the layout itself doesn’t work for how you live, a remodel is worth the added cost and time.
